3M disposable face masks prevent the spread of disease by containing droplets that we otherwise might unleash into our immediately environment from talking, cough, or sneezing. It’s a way for every individual to protect the ones they love, as well as they strangers that they might encounter when they go out of the house. People can wear different types of face coverings including homemade ones for the general public. For the front liners such as health care workers, the use of 3M disposable face masks and similar products can provide better results. The following are important things to remember when using them:
Wash Hands Before and After Use
It’s best to sanitize your hands before handling such a vital piece of protective gear during a pandemic. This reduces the likelihood of germ transfer from your hands to the mask itself. You can be more confident of what you will be placing on your face. Frequent handwashing should be practiced by those who are often in public areas such as hospitals, grocery stores, train stations, and the like.
Handle the Ear Loops
Once you have disinfected your hands, pick up a face mask by the ear loops. Do not grab one from the middle even if that is the one with the biggest surface area. Again, err on the side of caution and make sure that you do not endanger yourself or others. Use one hand for each loop and put it on. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth in the process.
Cover the Nose and Mouth
The mask itself should be able to cover the lower half of the face from the bridge of the nose to the underside of the chin. A lot of people pull this down so that they can breathe better. However, it defeats the purpose of wearing a mask. If you are doing an intense activity like running, then consider training outdoors in a place with few people where you can practice social distancing and not have to worry much about face covers.
Adjust the Fit
Once you have it on, adjust the fit so that it feels comfortable and it doesn’t slide down over time. These masks have a metal tab around the nose area. Make this conform to the shape of your nose by pinching it in place. Cover the base of your chin and tighten the ear loops. If the mask is too small or too big, then look for special products that can fit you.
